Moms Are Giving Good Business Opportunities A Chance

Stay-at-home-mom no longer mean a financially dependent woman. More women are raising kids and building thriving businesses from home.

According to an article in Investopedia, “mompreneur is a slang term describing women who start or run their own businesses while also acting as a full-time parent, where mompreneur is a combination of the words “mom” and “entrepreneur.”

Mompreneurship is not just about making money; it’s also about creating more varied opportunities for mothers while juggling parenting. It allows mothers have the best of both worlds.

More mothers are starting businesses and making it work for themselves and their families. The number of women who own their own business has risen by 24% over close to two decades. According to a recent study by American Express Open, women now start businesses at twice the rate of men and account for 58% of small business owners in America.

Profile of A Typical Mompreneur

Many new businesses started by moms are an immediate solution to a problem in their own lives. Many want to be able to enjoy the freedom of raising kids while doing meaningful work. For some, it is a passion or hobby that they successfully transitioned into a thriving business.

You have others like me, who found ways to work around the unique challenges they face in their lives. I needed to stay at home with my medically fragile daughter but required the validation of making money by serving others. So, entrepreneurship was the only option that fulfilled those two vital needs. It allowed me to create a hybrid schedule that makes it possible to make money while raising my kids at home.

Benefits For Self, Family & Community

  • Entrepreneurship is helping more full-time mothers achieve financial independence on our terms.
  • We are impacting lives beyond our immediate family by creating jobs and other economic opportunities for business partners. We are helping other businesses grow when we purchase goods or services for use in our business.
  • We help to increase the household income if we live with someone earning additional income.
  • We enjoy the flexibility that comes with being your own boss. You dictate your hours, schedule, and type of projects or work you take on.
  • Absence of mom guilt because we are fully present during the formative years of the children.

Though my journey as an entrepreneur is not without challenges, it has been worth every effort! I never knew just how much my family would benefit from this arrangement when I started. More importantly, my daughter is alive and thriving beyond all expectations and I am able to do work that I enjoy.

I am blessed to be in the ranks of mompreneurs who are making it work. Due to the COVID-19 lockdowns, new technology and new business models are constantly emerging that make working from anywhere possible. Now more than ever is a great time to leverage these opportunities and start your business from home. It may not be for everyone, but it works well for some of us!
